Snowy Mountains of Australia in Note by Note and Other Kindle Vella Serials

Hi everyone!

Now that Kindle Vella has been around for a few months and more people know about it, I thought I would take some time to focus on Note by Note and how it came to be. I've always been an avid reader since I was a kid. As I grew up, I became a fan of romance novels. The first one I read was recommended by our neighbor. It was Kathleen E Woodiwiss' Ashes in the Wind. She is credited with the invention of the modern historical romance novel. From then on, I was an avid romance reader.

I’ve also always been a writer. In 4th grade, our teacher would post a picture in his classroom every Monday and we would have to write a story about it by Friday. I wish I had some of those stories. I was always writing something or another while I was growing up.

I turned serious about wanting to be an author about 20 years ago when I started Note by Note (Yes, 20 years, I was raising two children and taking care of my elderly Mom). I wanted to write a romance, but had no idea what to do beyond boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, then happily ever after. But I knew I wanted something more. Since I’m a piano teacher, it seemed logical to incorporate music in the plot somehow. And my over-active imagination started to form ideas for clues in sheet music and art and make a mystery out of it.

I love to travel. I got it from my Aunt Rosella. She loved it, never married, so was able to see so much of the world. She actually did an around-the-world trip in 1964. My college roommate and I went to London and Paris during junior year and when we graduated, we kept planning vacations together. Washington, DC, Williamsburg, Florida, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hawaii, and finally our dream trip - Australia and New Zealand. We spent a month Down Under in 1995 and had the time of our lives. It was our favorite place.

So I decided to make Australia the home of Finn and Jess in Note by Note. Some of the settings around the world are places I’ve been, some are places I wish I could see.

Since the story begins in the Snowy Mountains of Australia, I’ll start there. We didn’t go to the Snowy Mountains, but we flew over them and spent some time in nearby Canberra, the capital city of Australia.

Here are some facts about the Snowy Mountains:

- Known informally as The Snowies, a range in the Australian Alps

- On the slopes are the Murray, Murrumbidgee, and Tumut rivers flowing inward and the Snowy River, flowing south

- Tallest mountain range in mainland Australia

- Highest point is Mount Kosciuszko at 7,3120 feet or 2,228 meters, 240 miles southwest of Sydney

- In the Australian state of New South Wales on the east coast

- The Snowy Mountains have large natural snowfalls every winter, in June, July, August, and early September (seasons are opposite of the Northern Hemisphere)

- The Aborigines are thought to have occupied the mountain range for 20,000 years

- The region is the backdrop for The Man from Snowy River, epic poem by Australia’s Banjo Peterson
